The Sandpile Load Balancer and Latency Minimization Problem
نویسنده
چکیده
I present the sandpile load balancer, an application of the abelian sandpile model to dynamic load balancing. The sandpile load balancer exploits the self-organized criticality of the abelian sandpile model to distribute web traffic across a network of servers. I also propose the sandpile load balancer latency minimization problem in which the goal is to minimize the latency of packets across the network of servers. I show the number of possible strategies for solving this problem and explore heuristic-based approaches via simulation.

Blade: A Data Center Garbage Collector
An increasing number of high-performance distributed systems are written in garbage collected languages. This removes a large class of harmful bugs from these systems. However, it also introduces high tail-latency do to garbage collection pause times. We address this problem through a new technique of garbage collection avoidance which we call BLADE. BLADE is an API between the collector and ap...
متن کاملImplementation of a Horizontal Scalable Balancer for Dew Computing Services
Cloud, fog and dew computing concepts offer elastic resources that can serve scalable services. These resources can be scaled horizontally or vertically. The former is more powerful, which increases the number of same machines (scaled out) to retain the performance of the service. However, this scaling is tightly connected with the existence of a balancer in front of the scaled resources that w...
متن کاملMaximum Load and Minimum Volume Structural Optimization
A bi-criteria optimization is considered whose objectives are the maximization of the load sustained by a structure and the minimization of the structure's volume. As the objectives are conflicting, the solution to the problem is of the Pareto type. The problem is elaborated for a thin-walled column of cruciform cross-section, prone to flexural and torsional buckling. A numerical example is als...
متن کاملOpenFlow based Load Balancing for Fat-Tree Networks with Multipath Support
Data center networks are designed for satisfying the data transmission demand of densely interconnected hosts in the data center. The network topology and routing mechanism can affect the performance and latency significantly. Nowadays, the fat-tree network is one of the most widely used topologies for data center networks. Network engineers also adopt load balancing methods in the design of ro...
متن کاملProbabilistic Multi Objective Optimal Reactive Power Dispatch Considering Load Uncertainties Using Monte Carlo Simulations
Optimal Reactive Power Dispatch (ORPD) is a multi-variable problem with nonlinear constraints and continuous/discrete decision variables. Due to the stochastic behavior of loads, the ORPD requires a probabilistic mathematical model. In this paper, Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) is used for modeling of load uncertainties in the ORPD problem. The problem is formulated as a nonlinear constrained mul...
